Fighting Cock Islet is a popular tourist destination and is regarded as the symbol of Halong Bay, Vietnam. Resembling the shape of a rooster and a hen standing opposite to each other, the islet creates an interesting visual and attracts tourists’ curiosity.
Besides, it is said to attach to a legend about two roosters fighting to protect the bay from foreign invaders. With its striking appearance, cultural significance, and historical legend, Fighting Cock Islet is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Halong Bay. Taking a boat tour to witness the miracle islet’s formation and shapes, taking the best photos, and admiring the stunning beauty of Halong Bay are top activities for travelers.
The fairy tale of Fighting Cock Islet
The legend surrounding Fighting Cock Islet describes the formation of the islet through the story of the Jade Emperor sending down a pair of chickens to recall a group of dragons he had previously sent to help the people of Vietnam. However, the chickens were sent in error and were petrified when they saw the beauty of their surroundings, resulting in the formation of the islet.
The islet's ability to withstand the elements and the passage of time symbolizes the unwavering determination and resilience that the people of Halong Bay hold dear. The islets creating Fighting Cock Islet have a height of more than 10 meters and appear to be precariously balanced on small "legs." Despite their precarious appearance, the islets have remained standing for millions of years, defying the elements and coexisting with the natural world. The people of Halong Bay see this enduring presence as a symbol of their resilience that refuses to be defeated by storms or other challenges.
The beauty of the islet
Two colossal stones stand facing each other, creating a striking and remarkably natural scene. From the base to the summit, the islands are covered in lush green trees, some of which add to the island's vitality, preventing it from looking like a pair of barren rocks. What surprises visitors is that from a distance, Fighting Cock Islet appears to have no legs, giving the impression that the massive stones are floating on the water. However, during low tide, visitors can see the "legs" of the two chickens.
Despite their massive size, the stones have been able to stand on these carefully polished feet for thousands of years, even though it seems as if the small legs could not possibly support their weight. Nevertheless, the islet stands still, an enduring and unchanging presence in the sea.
